Vol. Séan Campbell
11th May 1955
6th December 1975

Séan Campbell grew up in Faughart, County Louth in a house straddling the border -a constant reminder from an early age of the division of his country. Séan was the third eldest of six sons, some of who were imprisoned for their Republican activities.

On leaving school he worked as a tiler and was a popular young man with great energy and a love for life. He played Gaelic football for Roche Emmets in Co. Louth. One of his great interests was his motorbike and he was regularly seen riding around the local roads. It was an interest that also proved useful in his work as an IRA Volunteer.

Séan was part of one of the first sniper teams in South Armagh where his coolness under pressure was valued. An extremely active and highly respected Volunteer he was killed alongside his comrade Jim Lochrie while on active service on 6th December 1975.

When they died the South Armagh Brigade of Óglaigh na hÉireann lost two of their most dedicated volunteers.

Members of the Gardai clad in riot gear surrounded the graveyard as he was being buried but this did not prevent his comrades paying their final salute as a volley of shots had already been fired over Séan's coffin the night before.

Séan is buried in Kilcurry Cemetery, North Louth and his death was a tragic loss to his family and the entire Republican Movement.
